frequently asked questions

Q. Why would I choose Bamboo flooring over traditional Hardwood flooring?
A.
Essentially Bamboo is a grass, ‘environmentally friendly’, harvested from sustainable managed forests – a truly renewable resource to replace traditional hardwood flooring.
> Stability. Bamboo flooring by nature is an extremely stable hardwood, a truly reliable and consistent product.
> Value – Reasonably priced comparable to hardwood timber
> Termite Resistant – 99.5% resistant to termites
> Healthy – No toxic fumes. With 0.02 mg formaldehyde per
cubic meter of air, the adhesive used to laminate the Bamboo strips that form the flooring, off-gasses 16% less than the allowable limit under the stringent European standards that are 0.13 mg per cubic meter of air, far more stringent than the
U.S. standards.

Q. How is it made into flooring?
A.
There are 5 distinctive styles, each with a different method of manufacture. They come in different thicknesses, widths and finishes, please ask us to explain the different methods for;
> Horizontal T & G – flat grain laminated strips
> Vertical T & G – edge grain laminated strips
> Strand Woven T & G – compressed
> Unilin Clic® flooring system

Q. What colour does it come in?
A.
There are a variety of unique hues from the ultra light Wheat & Rye to deep rich Barossa
> New products are coloured Bamboo in Brown Mallee, Coral Reef & Black Opal Distressed style Unilin click flooring systems in Semi- Gloss finish.

Q. As the boards are pre-finished, can they be resanded later?
A. Yes, definitely, Bamboo flooring can be typically re-finished as you would for traditional hardwood flooring.

Q. Is there a Non-Toxic product available to apply to raw Bamboo?
A. There certainly is! We recommend Livos orTreatex® Harwood Oils, a durable had wax finish based on natural, sustainable raw materials, easy to apply will not flake, blister or peel, will not discolour and is spot repairable.

Q. Can I purchase Bamboo flooring as a raw board to seal
and polish?
A. Yes! Bamboo can be supplied as a raw finely sanded board ready to seal and polish, all styles, Vertical, Horizontal and Strand Woven. Please allow 12 weeks lead time for these products.

Q. What type of finish (coating) is used and is it
scratch resistant?
A. All our solid Bamboo flooring is protected against insects, rot
and mildew during the manufacturing process. The surfaces are pre-finished with a 6 stage water-based coatings and finished with the German manufactured ‘Klumpp’ scratch resistant aluminium oxide top-coat. The finishes are standard Semi-Gloss, Matt & High- Gloss by special order.
Just like hardwood flooring all care should be taken to protect the finish. It is scratch resistant but damage caused by negligence or improper maintenance would void the warranty.

Q. What about stiletto high heels?
A. High heels concentrate a person’s weight on a small point (estimate: 60kg person = approximately 150kg per square centimetre when taking a normal step). This kind of force can damage many types of flooring, fracturing ceramic tiles and perforating vinyl, as well as denting timber floors.
While high heels in good condition may not damage bamboo floors, we recommend a ‘no high heel’ policy where practical.

Q. Is Bamboo flooring durable?
A. Yes, absolutely! The definition of ‘durable’ is capable of lasting, resisting wear. Most people relate to durabability as wear.
By comparison the Vertical & Horizontal styles are comparable in hardness (wear) to Jarrah flooring; however the Strand Woven flooring is the 2nd hardest flooring on the planet – harder than all Australian hardwood timbers. Yes extremely durable!

Q. Can Bamboo flooring be used in the Kitchen? If the boards are pre-finished will milk or liquid spills be absorbed creating smelling and bacteria?
A. Yes, absolutely in the Kitchen! Our quality installation process includes using a cross-link adhesive on the top edge of the groove that seals the join resisting any absorption of liquids, thereby providing you have a safe & healthy environment in your kitchen.
